Nicole Pombier Berger     Our Story

I am a reader and writer, and I believe in the transformative power of literature. I have been changed by books I’ve read and stories I’ve heard: stories have the power to shake people, to wake people up, and I don't want to live in a culture that sleeps while genocide continues.

When I first encountered oral history as a grad student at Sarah Lawrence, it captivated my imagination. Oral history can be a canvas for voices that wouldn’t otherwise be read, and a vehicle for raising stories that must be told. In my work on oral history projects with friends and family, former prisoners in NYC, and most recently on a trip to Cambodia, I have experienced first-hand the power of listening, and I seen the impact on storytellers of having their voices heard. I am honored to contribute to the work of 3 Generations.

I majored in Culture and Politics in International Affairs at Georgetown for my undergraduate degree, and will receive my MFA in Writing from Sarah Lawrence in May ’09.
